My {vintage girls}

I am still working on pictures of the boys to post. Jack is going through a "don't take my picture" phase, similar to the phase his dad seems to be stuck in. LOL

You have a beautiful family!

My wife, Dawn (joysofboys), mentioned that you might like some photography tips. I'm not an expert, but I would be happy to help if I can.

RYC: It is wonderful having so many children to be models. The only problem is that I have so many photos to store now. lol

I do use photoshop and work with layers with almost everything I do. Mostly, for my regular photography, I just adjust the white balance, enhance the color to be how it really looked, and occasionally sharpness. I also crop a little if necessary, and sometimes clone out wires from the room or food from my children's faces lol.

I have an Olympus E-510 with the two lens kit. I also have a FL-50 flash (This is an on camera flash) I do not have what I need to remove it from the camera.

Since I really don't know how much you know about photography, I'll tell you the basics of how I take my photos and see if you have any questions from there.

I try to use the lowest ISO I can get away with - my camera doesn't handle noise very well :(. I have my camera set to Amperture mode unless my subject is moving and I need to use a faster shutter speed. I also use shutter priority with my flash in FP TTL mode and adjust the speed and brightness up. I only bounce my flash or else use it as fill outside in high contrast situations. I even try to bounce at those times if at all possible. If I want a blurred background I set my Amperture to its largest (smallest F number my lens will allow). It can also help to move the background further away to get a shallower depth of field. The opposite is true for greater DOF.

When taking photos of my children, I try to be at their level - unless trying for a different look. I often try to use the rule of thirds or else be just off center.

Lighting is the most important thing for me. Eyes are often the most important thing in the picture, and I try to take the picture I want without the need to crop. I often leave a little room for different size prints.

This is already a really long comment, so I'll stop here. If you have any questions just let me know.

I left some notes for you on the oldest blog entry on my site. If you would like to have them just...

1. Click the photo
2. Right click and select "save image as"
3. Save them to your computer.

I will delete them later.

I hope they help. It can be a lot to take in, but it is easy once you understand it. It also makes getting the picture you want much easier. Playing around and getting some experience will help the most.
