{custom white balance}

Here's a question for all you photographers out there who care to answer: Do you use a custom white balance when you take your pictures? If not, which setting do you use? I have been practicing using my WB settings and so far I like the shady the best, but I also made a custom white that I've stored in my camera. I used my custom white on this picture of Ben. Lately I've been taking pictures in AV mode because I pretty much know which f-stop I want to use but I don't always know which exposure will be best. Which mode do you all use most of the time? Any tips or advice?

generally i use auto white balance unless:
1. i am in an area of mixed light (tungsten and sunlight for example). with mixed light i use the expodisc (or you could use a gray card) and do custom.
2. if after i take an image it looks off (too blue etc...) then i switch it to the appropriate w.b. setting (tungsten, shade, flourescent, etc...) if that doesn't work i grab the expodisc and do custom!

i hope that helps!

Hey! Love this pic. Your baby has the prettiest eyes! I am with you on using the shady- it's the one I use most often too. I haven't done custom wb but I keep meaning to try it! I also shoot in A too (that's the Nikon version of Av) for the same reason you mentioned.

Hey, thanks for all your comments. I don't know a single thing about photography but I love pictures and having my first child I really wanted a decent camera to take pictures with. My husband bought me a canon rebel xti for Mother's Day. It's been a lot of fun playing with it...I just wish I had more time to figure it out since I work full time and I'm a mommy full time! I just have some cheapo $80 canon lens so nothing fancy but its still better than my camera phone!:) Oh, and thanks for the advice on the photo editing software! I'm gonna have to check it out.

Cute Picture!
I use custom WB... although now I'm interested in the expodisc that Carin is talking about. I always usually always shoot in manual... I like my pictures brighter than what the camera always does in A mode.
